Romen Dixon, 18, has been granted bail with strict conditions after allegedly stabbing a man in a busy regional supermarket. The incident, which occurred on May 8, resulted in one individual suffering a minor laceration to his arm. Dixon had been living independently in Toowoomba prior to his arrest and has since been in a mental health ward.
According to ABC News, a psychiatrist’s report presented in court indicated that Dixon was experiencing severe mental health issues, including hearing voices that instructed him to harm others. Magistrate Veena Goverdhan noted that he was convinced his parents and others were part of a conspiracy, which contributed to his actions during the incident.
Dixon’s father, Richard Dixon, expressed his concern for his son’s mental health and highlighted the need for families to recognize early warning signs in young men. He traveled 2,000 kilometers from north-west Queensland to support his son during the court proceedings. Richard promised to ensure that Romen complies with his bail conditions, including attending medical appointments for antipsychotic medication.
The court granted bail with conditions that require Dixon to live with his parents and adhere to treatment protocols. Magistrate Goverdhan stated that a doctor confirmed Dixon was stable enough for release into the community. However, police prosecutor Amanda Stephens raised concerns about the safety of the family due to the remote location, suggesting a risk of reoffending.
Despite these concerns, the magistrate was satisfied that Dixon’s family and the north-west community would not be at risk. His case has been adjourned to September through the mental health court.
