The ABC is searching for Australia’s next generation of inspiring research communicators across Science, the Humanities, and the Arts to share their ideas, findings and insights with the world.

Applications are now open for the 2023 ABC TOP 5 media residencies.

Five successful applicants from each of the three fields will receive intensive two-week media training and practical experience in residence at ABC Radio National, working alongside some of Australia’s best journalists and broadcasters.

Cath Dwyer, Manager ABC Radio National, says engaging with the media can be a daunting prospect for many early career researchers.

“Media organisations play an important role in encouraging and fostering emerging research talent, and connecting Australians with new ideas and ways of thinking. The ABC TOP 5 program provides early career researchers with career-long skills, knowledge and confidence to communicate with all media and their audiences about their field of expertise,” she says.

“The ABC TOP 5 program is the only one of its kind in Australia. It’s now in its ninth year and boasts 80 alumni, with many becoming leading commentators in their fields and mentors for other early career researchers.

“The ABC is proud to be working with our project partners at the University of Melbourne, the Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian National University and the University of Sydney whose support makes the TOP 5 possible.”

Applications open 8.30am (AEST) Friday 31 March 2023 and close 11.59pm (AEST) Sunday 14 May 2023.

Who can apply for the TOP 5 programs?

  • Humanities: PhD-qualified early career researchers in humanities, arts and social sciences (HASS)
  • Science: PhD-qualified early career researchers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medical research (STEMM)
  • Arts: Early-career Arts researchers – with or studying for – a PhD in visual arts, architecture, design, performance, screen, literature, or music.
