Comedian Tim Heidecker is set to take the helm of Infowars, pending a Texas court’s approval of a deal by the Onion to acquire the controversial platform. According to The Guardian, Heidecker aims to parody the site and its founder, Alex Jones, known for promoting conspiracy theories and misinformation.

The Onion’s parent company, Global Tetrahedron, has reached a potential six-month leasing agreement for Infowars, valued at $81,000 per month. This comes after a lengthy legal battle over Jones’s false claims regarding the Sandy Hook shooting, which resulted in a $1.4 billion defamation judgment against him. The court’s approval for the takeover is still pending, with a hearing scheduled for May 28.

Heidecker envisions the new Infowars as a platform that undermines its previous toxic reputation, turning it into a comedy hub. He plans to use satire to highlight Jones’s outlandish claims, stating, “One of my first thoughts is just what a great joke it would be, over time, if we could change the meaning and understanding of the site itself.”

The new Infowars will not only feature comedic content but also support the Sandy Hook families financially through merchandise sales. Heidecker is keen on creating a space for diverse, non-mainstream comedy while maintaining a focus on mocking the absurdities of the previous Infowars.

Heidecker’s approach reflects a broader aim to shift the narrative surrounding Infowars and potentially re-engage its audience in a more constructive direction. As he prepares for this ambitious project, he emphasizes the importance of humor in addressing serious issues, hoping to draw attention away from the divisive culture wars that have characterized recent years.
