A community in Wagga Wagga is grappling with shock and grief following the death of a baby and the hospitalization of another infant after a 37-year-old woman gave birth at a homeless camp over the weekend. Emergency services were called to the site along the Murrumbidgee River near Wagga Beach on Saturday afternoon, responding to concerns for welfare. According to ABC News, police reported that they found the woman with two infants; however, one was deceased.
The surviving infant and the mother were treated by paramedics and transported to Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. Authorities believe there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident, and a report is being prepared for the coroner.
Vickie Burkinshaw, president of the Wagga Women’s Health Centre, described the event as a “terrible day for our community.” She expressed hope that this tragedy could serve as a catalyst for urgent action regarding the homelessness crisis in the area. Currently, the center has a waitlist of 76 women seeking assistance.
Burkinshaw emphasized the need for immediate solutions to the affordable housing crisis, which she attributes to various factors, including domestic violence, mental health issues, and the rising cost of living. She noted that the waitlist for community housing is currently four years for those in the greatest need. A community meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night to discuss potential solutions to the ongoing housing issues.
The presence of makeshift camps along the river, complete with piles of rubbish and children’s toys, highlights the dire situation many are facing. Burkinshaw called for a more compassionate approach to addressing homelessness, stressing that such conditions should not exist in a wealthy community. She urged for innovative solutions, including utilizing empty bedrooms in existing housing, rather than solely focusing on building new social housing.
