A 15-year-old footballer has died after collapsing during a match. According to BBC News, Oxford United stated that Amelia Aplin, an academy player, collapsed during a game against Fulham at the club’s training centre in Horspath on Saturday afternoon.
Amelia was described as “an enormously talented goalkeeper” by the Junior Premier League. Its chief executive, Martin Brock, expressed condolences, stating, “She was a leader and a bright light in our all-stars programme. Our thoughts are with her family, her friends and her teammates at this unspeakably difficult time.” The league noted that her loss would be felt deeply across the football community.
The statement added that Amelia embodied the qualities hoped for in a young footballer, including resilience, passion, and strong team spirit. As a goalkeeper, she played with courage and determination, inspiring her teammates consistently.
Oxford United also expressed gratitude for the efforts of the medical staff from both Oxford United and Fulham Football Club, as well as the emergency services. The club plans to support Amelia’s family, players, coaches, and staff affected by this tragic incident. They requested that the family’s privacy be respected during this difficult time.
In light of the tragedy, Sunday’s match between Oxford United Women and Real Bedford has been postponed.
