Arabic version: ترامب يلغي الضربات على إيران بعد اختراق دبلوماسي
United States President Donald Trump announced the cancellation of planned attacks on Iran, marking a significant shift in strategy after previously threatening to hit Kharg Island and other oil facilities. Trump stated that negotiations with Tehran were nearing a deal, leading to the decision to halt military action. According to Al Jazeera, he expressed optimism in a Truth Social post, indicating that discussions had been elevated to Iran’s top leadership and that the “final points” of an agreement had been approved by all parties involved, including the US and several regional allies.
In Iran, many citizens expressed relief at the prospect of an end to the ongoing conflict, which has caused significant hardship. The Iranian government is framing the potential deal as a victory, suggesting that the sacrifices made during the war could lead to a stronger position for the country, with hopes for lifted sanctions and unfrozen assets.
Richard Weitz, an international security expert, analyzed Trump’s approach, describing it as an ‘escalate to de-escalate’ strategy. This tactic involves threatening to intensify conflict in order to achieve a diplomatic resolution. However, Weitz noted that uncertainties remain regarding the specifics of the agreement and its implementation.
In Washington, there are indications that Trump has been attempting to manage Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s influence over the situation. There are concerns within the White House that Netanyahu might hinder diplomatic efforts aimed at curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions, prompting Trump to advocate for patience and allow time for diplomacy.
Meanwhile, in Lebanon, Hezbollah reported conducting 24 attacks against Israeli forces, utilizing drones, missiles, and rockets across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley. This escalation comes amid the broader context of the conflict involving Iran and its regional dynamics.
