Arabic version: ترامب ينتقد المستشار الألماني بسبب تصريحاته حول حرب إيران
President Donald Trump has hit out at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for his criticism of the United States-Israeli war on Iran, asserting that the conflict is essential to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Trump’s comments, made on Tuesday, highlight his ongoing frustration with European allies for their lack of support in the conflict.
According to Al Jazeera, Trump stated, “The Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon. He doesn’t know what he’s talking about! If Iran had a Nuclear Weapon, the whole World would be held hostage.” He emphasized that if Iran were to possess nuclear capabilities, it would pose a global threat.
Merz had previously described the military campaign against Iran as “ill-considered,” reflecting a significant shift from his typically pro-Israel stance. He cautioned that conflicts like the one in Iran require careful exit strategies, drawing parallels to the prolonged engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The criticism from Merz comes as Germany grapples with economic challenges exacerbated by the war, including rising oil prices. Despite being a longstanding ally of the US and Israel, Merz’s remarks indicate a growing concern about the ramifications of the conflict.
Trump has also expressed dissatisfaction with European nations for not participating directly in the war or aiding in military efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz. During a previous meeting, he threatened trade repercussions against Spain due to its position on the conflict. While praising Germany’s relationship with the US, Trump’s comments underscore the increasing strain in transatlantic relations over the war on Iran.
