Arabic version: ترامب يأمر بفرض حصار فوري على مضيق هرمز
President Donald Trump announced that the United States Navy will begin blockading the Strait of Hormuz “immediately” after peace talks between the US and Iran in Pakistan ended without an agreement. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump accused Iran of “extortion” and stated that the US Navy would hunt down and interdict ships in international waters that have paid Iran a toll to traverse the strait. According to Al Jazeera, Trump emphasized the urgency of the blockade, asserting that it would involve cooperation with unspecified other countries.
The Strait of Hormuz is a crucial chokepoint for global oil shipments, and Iran has essentially taken control over the strait since the onset of the US-Israel war on Iran on February 28. Traffic through the strait has slowed to a trickle, impacting about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas shipments, which has raised alarms within the global economy.
Trump’s declaration has sparked concerns regarding the fragile ceasefire that has been in place for two weeks. Analysts noted that Trump’s statements reflect frustration and could jeopardize efforts for a long-term peace in the region. Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi urged for the extension of the ceasefire and continued diplomatic discussions, emphasizing the need for painful concessions to avoid war.
Iran has denied US claims regarding its warships operating in the strait and warned of a strong response to any military incursions. Trump labeled Iran’s actions as “world extortion” and threatened severe consequences for Iranian forces that engage with US or allied vessels. He reiterated that the blockade aims to prevent Iran from profiting from oil sales to favored nations, declaring, “It’s going to be all or none, and that’s the way it is.”
Criticism emerged from Democratic lawmakers, who questioned the effectiveness of a blockade in persuading Iran to open the strait. Senator Mark Warner expressed skepticism about the connection between the blockade and potential negotiations, highlighting the complexity of the situation. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have indicated plans to implement a toll system for passage through the strait once hostilities cease, recognizing their leverage over this vital maritime route.
