US President Donald Trump has departed China following a three-day trip, touting several broad trade deals but suggesting little progress on key issues related to Taiwan or the US-Israeli war in Iran. This visit marks the first of his second term, characterized by ceremonial greetings and private tours of historical sites, including the Temple of Heaven.

According to Al Jazeera, both nations characterized the visit as a success, even if their accounts of what was agreed to varied. Trump indicated that he and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed Taiwan, with Xi reaffirming his opposition to Taiwanese independence. Trump stated he did not make a commitment either way regarding US arms sales to Taiwan, an issue that has received strong support from the US Congress and is opposed by Beijing.

On the topic of Iran, Trump revealed that he and Xi spoke at length about the US-Israeli war and the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, Trump downplayed the urgency of the situation, stating he was not “asking for any favours” regarding Iran. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of negotiations to resolve differences between the US and Iran.

During the trip, Trump traveled with a delegation of top US business leaders and touted “fantastic trade deals for both countries.” He announced that China agreed to purchase 200 jets from Boeing, marking a significant development in US-China trade relations. The White House also indicated that China might soon increase its purchases of US oil and agricultural products, although specific details were not disclosed.

Despite the optimistic tone regarding trade, there were no updates on the status of a truce reached last October concerning tariffs. Trump mentioned that he and Xi “did not discuss tariffs” during their meetings, leaving the future of trade relations uncertain as both sides prepare to establish a trade council and investment council for ongoing discussions.
