Arabic version: ترامب يهدد بفرض حصار بحري ضد إيران بعد فشل المفاوضات
After a diplomatic team led by Vice-President JD Vance tried, and failed, to reach a negotiated agreement to end the US war with Iran, President Donald Trump announced plans for a naval blockade of Iran via a series of posts on Truth Social. He stated that no ship paying an ‘illegal toll’ would have safe passage on the high seas, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route.
According to BBC News, Trump indicated that the US military was prepared to take further action against Iran as needed. He claimed that while there had been some progress in negotiations, Iran had not agreed to abandon its nuclear ambitions, which remains a significant point of contention.
The US military Central Command later clarified that the blockade would stop all ships traveling to or from Iranian ports, presenting new challenges and risks. Questions remain about how the US will enforce this blockade and the potential repercussions for nations reliant on Iranian oil, such as China.
Despite Trump’s assertions, some lawmakers expressed skepticism about the blockade’s effectiveness. Senator Mark Warner voiced concerns over how the blockade would compel Iran to open the Strait, while Congressman Mike Turner described it as a strategy to bring allies together for a resolution.
As the conflict continues into its second month, the situation remains fraught. Polls indicate that 59% of Americans believe the war is not going well for the US, with key objectives still unmet. Trump’s gamble on the economic impact of rising oil prices may also have political ramifications as midterm elections approach.
