US President Donald Trump has instructed negotiators “not to rush into a deal” with Iran, emphasizing the importance of taking time to reach a comprehensive agreement. This statement follows earlier indications that a deal was nearing completion, which reportedly includes a 60-day ceasefire extension and plans for further discussions regarding Iran’s nuclear program. According to BBC News, Trump highlighted that both sides should ensure they “get it right” during negotiations.

Speculation about the agreement’s imminent announcement arose after Trump indicated that it had been “largely negotiated.” Iranian officials echoed similar sentiments, with foreign ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei noting that the two sides are both “very close and very far” from finalizing an agreement. Reports suggest that the proposed deal does not resolve all contentious issues, leaving key topics such as the scope and timing of Iranian sanctions relief and nuclear ambitions for future negotiations.

The potential agreement has divided Republican lawmakers, with some expressing concerns about its leniency towards Iran. Senator Ted Cruz criticized the plan as “a disastrous mistake,” while others, like Representative Mike Lawler, viewed it as a necessary step towards genuine negotiations. Recently, the US and Israel launched wide-ranging strikes on Iran, leading to heightened tensions in the region and significant disruptions in oil supply through the Strait of Hormuz.

Following a ceasefire in early April, the US maintained a blockade of Iranian ports, which Trump stated would remain in full force and effect until a certified agreement is reached. In his social media commentary, Trump reiterated the importance of preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons, a claim that Iran disputes, asserting that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

As negotiations continue, some reports indicate that Iran may eventually agree to surrender highly-enriched uranium. Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, involved in mediating talks, expressed optimism about a positive outcome being within reach. Trump characterized the ongoing discussions as a “memorandum of understanding,” underscoring the evolving nature of these negotiations.
