A long-delayed military spending plan will be published on Tuesday, following significant delays. According to BBC News, the defence investment plan (DIP) aims to enhance the UK’s military capabilities, including a £5 billion investment focused on drones and autonomous technology.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that the DIP will feature the largest investment in drones for the UK Armed Forces over the next four years. Plans include transforming the Royal Navy into a hybrid force, incorporating self-controlled vessels and artificial intelligence alongside traditional warships.
Despite the announcement of a £13.5 billion funding increase, the MoD’s request for £28 billion was not fully met, leading to criticism from opposition parties. The Conservatives labeled the plan as “too little, too late,” while the Liberal Democrats expressed concerns that it inadequately supports the Armed Forces.
The release of the DIP comes at a critical time, shortly before the NATO leaders summit in Turkey on July 7. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who is nearing the end of his term, emphasized that the plan would provide essential support to the UK’s military and foster growth within the country’s industrial base. However, the ongoing discussions over funding have resulted in the resignation of two defence ministers, who cited insufficient financial provisions as a primary concern.
The DIP will outline how new equipment and defence infrastructure will be financed over the coming decade, reflecting lessons learned from recent conflicts. The plan is expected to address the evolving nature of warfare, particularly the increased use of uncrewed systems in modern combat scenarios.
