The UK is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar close to 40°C. According to BBC News, public services are struggling to cope with the extreme conditions, prompting hundreds of schools to close and travel warnings issued on railways.
The Guardian reports that the heatwave, exacerbated by climate change, has added an estimated 2-4°C to the current temperatures. The Met Office has issued red warnings across various regions, indicating a danger to life from the intense heat.
In addition to the heat, the weather has been marked by unusual phenomena, including 29,000 lightning strikes in a single night. Fatalities have occurred in neighboring France, where over 40 people have drowned while trying to stay cool, including two children left in a car.
As the UK grapples with these extreme temperatures, there is a notable increase in outdoor activities, with many people flocking to beaches and parks to escape the heat. Reports suggest that sales of ice cream makers and fans have surged as residents seek relief from the sweltering conditions.
