Arabic version: ارتفاع اقتراض الحكومة البريطانية إلى مستويات قياسية في فبراير
UK government borrowing rose unexpectedly to £14.3 billion in February, marking the second highest level for that month since records began, according to BBC News. Official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed that an increase in government tax receipts was outweighed by a rise in spending, including from debt interest payments.
Economists had expected borrowing to be £8.8 billion in February, highlighting a significant deviation from expectations. The reported figure reflects the difference between total public sector spending and tax income for the month before the start of the US-Israel war with Iran.
In response to the rising borrowing levels, the Treasury asserted that it possesses the “right economic plan” and emphasized that the country is better prepared for a more volatile world.
