The United Nations has called for an investigation into a deadly strike on a girls’ school in southern Iran, which occurred on the first day of US and Israeli attacks against the country. The UN Human Rights Office urged the forces responsible for the bombing to investigate and provide insights into the incident, although it did not specify who it believed was accountable. According to SBS News, UN spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani described the attack as “absolutely horrific,” highlighting the despair and cruelty depicted in images shared on social media.

UN High Commissioner Volker Turk emphasized the need for a prompt, impartial, and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the strike. He also urged all parties involved to exercise restraint and return to negotiations. The attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of 150 students, according to Iran’s ambassador to the UN in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, who labeled the incident as “unjustifiable” and “criminal.”

While the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that US forces would not deliberately target a school, Israel has announced it is investigating the incident. However, the UN’s human rights office has indicated that it currently lacks sufficient information to determine whether the strike constitutes a war crime.
