President Donald Trump announced that the United States will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland. This decision follows the Pentagon’s recent cancellation of a planned deployment of 4,000 troops to the same country. Writing on Truth Social, Trump attributed the troop increase to the strong relationship he has with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, whom he supported in last year’s presidential elections.
According to BBC News, further details on whether these additional troops are part of the previously planned deployment or a separate initiative remain unclear. The White House has indicated a desire to reduce overall troop levels in Europe as part of its “America First” policy. Earlier this month, the US announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany after a row between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the war with Iran.
The announcement of the troop increase comes as foreign ministers from NATO countries prepare to meet in Sweden, where US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to discuss burden-sharing among NATO partners. Trump has voiced dissatisfaction with NATO allies for not supporting the US’s stance on various issues, including pressure on Iran.
The Polish President Nawrocki has expressed strong support for Trump, stating that he believes Trump is the only leader capable of effectively confronting challenges posed by Russia. Despite criticisms of NATO from Trump, Nawrocki maintains that the US plays a crucial role in ensuring security in Europe. The US military presence in Poland is part of its broader strategy to maintain a strong military footprint in Europe, especially in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
