The first round of negotiations between the US and Iran in Switzerland has concluded with mediators reporting “encouraging progress.” According to Al Jazeera, a high-level committee has been established to oversee further discussions on critical issues such as nuclear programs and sanctions.

Mediators from Pakistan and Qatar have announced a 60-day roadmap aimed at reaching a final agreement. This includes a communication line regarding the Strait of Hormuz and a “de-confliction cell” intended to halt military operations in Lebanon. Chief negotiators will report to the new committee and manage working groups focused on various disputes.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi expressed optimism about the negotiations, highlighting that the US has agreed to waive certain sanctions on Iranian oil and release some frozen assets. Meanwhile, Iran’s top negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has cautioned against US threats, emphasizing the need for careful rhetoric.

In Lebanon, reports indicate that a ceasefire is holding after a series of violent clashes. Al Jazeera’s Heidi Pett noted a cautious calm in Nabatieh, following brutal days of conflict. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated that Israeli forces will remain in southern Lebanon as long as necessary, while Hezbollah has pledged to respond to any ceasefire violations.
