The United States has imposed sanctions on four activists involved in flotilla missions seeking to break Israel’s 19-year siege on Gaza. These sanctions were announced on Tuesday following the interception of aid ships by Israeli forces, which led to the abduction of at least 430 activists. According to Al Jazeera, the US accused the flotilla’s organizers of attempting to reach Gaza “in support of Hamas,” although no public evidence was provided to substantiate these claims.

The Gaza blockade has resulted in severe shortages of essential supplies, including food, water, and medical aid, affecting approximately 2.3 million residents. Since the onset of the conflict in October 2023, over 72,000 Palestinians have reportedly died, with more than 800 killed since Israel agreed to a “ceasefire” in October last year. Activists assert that the flotillas are intended to deliver humanitarian aid and raise awareness about the blockade, which has been criticized by various rights groups as a form of collective punishment.

The US Department of the Treasury identified the sanctioned individuals as members of the Popular Conference for Palestinians Abroad (PCPA) and the advocacy network Samidoun. Among those targeted are Mohammed Khatib and Jaldia Abubakra, both known for their activism on behalf of Palestinian rights. The sanctions will freeze any assets these individuals may hold in the US and prohibit American entities from engaging in business with them.

Flotilla organizers have expressed concerns that these sanctions are part of a broader strategy to justify further crackdowns on humanitarian missions. Activists like Sumeyra Akdeniz Ordu have criticized the narrative that links humanitarian efforts to terrorism, stating that the sanctions are not just aimed at specific individuals but at the entire movement supporting Gaza. They vow to continue their efforts despite the risks involved.

The US government’s actions come alongside broader sanctions against various individuals involved in documenting alleged abuses in Gaza, drawing condemnation from rights advocates who argue that such measures undermine humanitarian efforts. The flotilla activists remain resolute, emphasizing their commitment to delivering aid and standing in solidarity with the people of Gaza, regardless of the challenges they face.
