Two police officers were “seriously injured” and 14 arrests were made in Glasgow following disorder after Celtic’s Premiership title win against Hearts. According to BBC News, the trouble erupted as around 3,000 fans gathered in the Trongate area after the match.
Initially, the atmosphere was celebratory with fans lighting green flares and enjoying drinks. However, the situation escalated when police officers, who were assisting paramedics at a medical emergency, were attacked with bottles and other projectiles. Assistant Chief Constable Mark Sutherland expressed his disgust at the violence and called on Celtic FC to “step forward” to ensure there was no repeat of the disorder next year.
Police Scotland reported that 10 arrests were made in the Trongate area and four at Celtic Park, with additional arrests anticipated as they review CCTV footage. Four more arrests occurred in Edinburgh. Sutherland noted that one officer sustained facial injuries while the other suffered bruising from the assaults.
By Sunday morning, the aftermath of the celebrations saw damaged traffic lights being repaired and debris cleared from the streets. Police had previously criticized Celtic for not having a plan in place to manage fan celebrations safely. Glasgow City Council stated that, while most fans celebrated appropriately, the actions of some individuals were embarrassing and let down the city and their fellow supporters.
The chaotic scene also included a pitch invasion by Celtic fans following their third goal, which led to confusion regarding the match’s conclusion. Hearts condemned the “menacing and threatening atmosphere inside the stadium,” prompting an immediate exit for their staff without post-match duties. The SPFL is now reviewing the incident and plans to discuss measures to address pitch invasions with the Scottish government.
