Arabic version: اندلاع العنف في ألبانيا وسط احتجاجات ضد الحكومة
Tirana, Albania – Anti-government protests in Albania turned violent on Saturday, resulting in clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement officials. At least 13 people have been arrested as tensions escalated over the government’s handling of various issues, including economic challenges and corruption allegations.
The protests, organized by the opposition Democratic Party, began peacefully in the capital city of Tirana but quickly devolved into chaos. Demonstrators gathered outside the Prime Minister’s office, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and calling for accountability amid rising living costs and widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s policies.
As the protests grew in size, some participants began throwing stones and other projectiles at police, who responded with tear gas to disperse the crowd. Witnesses reported that the situation escalated rapidly, with groups of protesters clashing with law enforcement in multiple locations throughout the city.
Opposition leader Sali Berisha addressed the crowd earlier in the day, urging citizens to continue their fight against what he described as a corrupt and ineffective government. “We will not stop until we bring about change and restore democracy in our country,” Berisha declared.
The protests were fueled by a combination of economic grievances, including high inflation rates and increasing unemployment, which have left many Albanians struggling to make ends meet. Additionally, allegations of corruption within the government have sparked outrage among citizens who feel betrayed by their leaders.
In response to the unrest, Prime Minister Rama condemned the violence and called for calm, emphasizing that the government is committed to addressing the concerns of its citizens. “We are open to dialogue, but violence is not the answer,” he stated in a press conference following the clashes.
International observers have expressed concern over the rising tensions in Albania, urging both the government and opposition to seek peaceful solutions to the ongoing crisis. The situation remains fluid, with additional protests planned in the coming days as opposition groups vow to continue their campaign against the government.
The violent turn of events in Tirana marks a significant escalation in the ongoing political turmoil in Albania, a country that has struggled with issues of governance and public trust in recent years. As the protests continue, the eyes of the international community remain fixed on Albania, hoping for a resolution that prioritizes stability and democratic principles.
