Arabic version: المتطوعون revitaliz Coledale RSL بعد الإغلاق
The Coledale RSL has regained its vitality, thanks to a dedicated group of community volunteers. According to ABC News, the club faced closure in 2022 due to declining trade after COVID-19 and consecutive wet summers.
Noel “Rooster” Brackenreg, a 90-year-old veteran and long-time patron, was among more than 80 volunteers who stepped in to rescue the club. Brackenreg, who has a deep connection to the RSL dating back to its construction in 1948, emphasized the importance of keeping the club alive for the community.
President Melissa Ellery initially feared the club was doomed, as it had lost its community focus and relied heavily on gambling revenue. However, with the initiative to engage volunteers, the RSL shifted its model, focusing on food and live music instead of gambling. In 2023, on the eve of appointing a liquidator, 40 volunteers came forward, eager to help.
The volunteers underwent training and began revitalizing the club, which now operates with a mix of volunteer support and a small number of hired staff. The club has also leased its bistro to a local restaurant, enhancing its community ties.
With the number of volunteers doubling since reopening, the RSL is now financially stable. Brackenreg continues to contribute by maintaining the grounds and sharing stories, while families like the Johnstons volunteer together, honoring their veteran heritage and fostering community spirit.
