Arabic version: تم إسقاط تهم الاعتداء ضد ويندل سيلور بسبب مشاكل الصحة العقلية
All charges against former footballer Wendell Sailor have been dismissed by a Sydney court under mental health grounds. Sailor faced charges related to two alleged drunken rampages, one occurring in 2024 at a Sydney bar, where he was accused of common assault and other offences.
According to ABC News, Sailor was arrested after he refused to leave a licensed premises in Sydney’s CBD due to his conduct. He was also charged last year for an incident in Wollongong, which involved aggressive behavior towards a taxi driver and resisting arrest.
During the proceedings at Downing Centre Local Court, Magistrate Jennifer Atkinson noted that Sailor’s case fell under Section 14 of the Mental Health Act, allowing for diversion from the criminal justice system for defendants with mental health impairments. The court heard that Sailor was suffering from a major depressive disorder at the time of the offences, which contributed to his excessive alcohol use.
Sailor has since been discharged into the care of his doctor for treatment and has begun psychiatric therapy. The court accepted a health plan proposed by his lawyer to address his mental health and alcohol-related challenges. Prior to these incidents, Sailor had nothing on his criminal record, and the court acknowledged personal struggles, including the death of his mother and the end of a relationship.
