Wes Streeting has announced his resignation from the Labour Party, citing a lack of confidence in leader Keir Starmer. In a speech, he emphasized that Labour is currently losing a critical battle against nationalism, which he views as a significant threat to the United Kingdom’s integrity. Streeting stated, “I left the government because we are in the fight of our lives against nationalism, and it is a fight that we are currently losing.”
According to The Guardian, Streeting expressed concerns that unless the party changes its course, it risks losing power to the Reform UK party. He criticized the rise of nationalism in Scotland, Wales, and England, describing it as an existential threat.
In his resignation speech, Streeting argued that Labour has been “treading water” and must demonstrate its ability to enact significant change. He stressed the importance of defending the values that underpin the National Health Service, stating that these values reflect the ideals that have historically made the UK great.
Streeting also addressed the political landscape, asserting that patriotism has been monopolized by extreme voices. He called for a renewed commitment to progressive ideals, emphasizing that the fight against nationalism is not just about the future of the government, but about the broader values of hope and community in the UK.
