The repeated attacks on the submerged monasteries area in Wadi Natron, located in the Beheira Governorate, have persisted in recent years. These attacks are attributed to Rokia Said Ibrahim Gharib, who is known for targeting one of Egypt’s most significant Coptic archaeological sites, dating back to the early centuries of Christianity. The most recent incident occurred just a few weeks ago in March. This follows her attempt in October of last year to seize an estimated 68 acres of land without facing a fair trial for her actions. Although the case was officially handled, and the encroachment was removed, with the land being returned to the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, this situation has incited outrage among the Coptic community, as well as among the monks and the bishop of the nearby St. Bishoy Monastery.

Copts are seeking answers to several pressing questions: Who bears responsibility for the repeated attempts to encroach upon this land, which is considered state property, particularly by Rokia and her followers? Who is supporting and protecting her? What is the purpose behind the persistent efforts of the Wadi Natron city council to reclaim this land? Furthermore, there has been a notable lack of response from the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, which is tasked with safeguarding this vital area adjacent to St. Bishoy Monastery. This region contains the remnants of valuable ancient monasteries and holds the potential to become one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the near future.

Despite the ongoing issues in the submerged monasteries area, there has been no reaction from the Governor of Beheira, Jacqueline Azar, who is known for visiting towns and villages in the governorate to oversee the removal of encroachments and enhance local infrastructure. She has also been active in visiting government institutions and schools while taking action against underperformance. This raises questions about her absence from this critical area, especially in collaboration with security leaders to closely monitor the situation with officials from the Wadi Natron city council and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities. Investigations into the complaints filed against Rokia are warranted, and the Beheira Security Director should be tasked with deploying police patrols to closely monitor the area and apprehend anyone attempting to encroach on the land again, serving as a deterrent to those who might consider repeating such offenses.
