Wigan Warriors beat Warrington Wolves 30-18 to move to within two points of Super League leaders Leeds Rhinos. According to BBC News, the victory put Wigan on 26 points while Warrington dropped to fourth on points difference behind Wakefield Trinity.

Young stand-ins repaid head coach Matt Peet’s faith, with Josh Cartwright, Taylor Kerr, Kian McDermott and Austin Daniel all scoring their first senior tries after filling gaps caused by the club’s injury troubles. Wigan lost full-back Jai Field on the morning of the match with a back injury, and Cartwright — who had made only two Super League appearances before this game — only found out he was playing that morning.

Warrington raced into a 12-0 lead through Albert Hopoate and Ewan Irwin, and the match see-sawed for long periods. Cartwright reduced the deficit while James Bentley was in the sin-bin for repeated infringements, and 19-year-old Kerr’s equaliser came three minutes after the break. Irwin also kicked a penalty and finished the night with 10 points for Warrington.

Harry Smith’s pass created Eckersley’s 16th Super League try of the season to give Wigan the lead, and Matty Ashton hit back for Warrington with his 99th try for the club to make it 18-18. McDermott forced his way over after a touch back by Daniel, and Daniel sealed the win with a late corner score. Keighran converted five from five to finish the scoring. Peet told BBC Radio Manchester he was “immensely proud” of the group and said of his young players: “They don’t surprise me, they just always live up to expectations.” Wigan have now won eight of nine games in all competitions since their April defeat to Warrington at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
