The World Lebanese Cultural Union (WLCU) has honoured Tony Burke in recognition of his efforts in supporting humanitarian assistance for Lebanon during its ongoing crisis.
A delegation from the WLCU visited Minister Burke’s office in Sydney to express gratitude for his role in helping secure approval from the Australian Federal Government for two humanitarian aid packages to Lebanon, each valued at AUD $5 million, totalling AUD $10 million. The assistance, delivered through Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has helped provide essential support to many Lebanese families facing difficult circumstances.
During the meeting, WLCU World President Dr Abraham Constantin thanked Minister Burke for his continued support for Lebanon and formally presented him with the organisation’s highest honour — the WLCU Knight Medal — in recognition of his contribution to securing the humanitarian funding.
In his remarks, Dr Constantin said the honour represents the highest distinction the organisation can bestow, acknowledging outstanding service, leadership, and unwavering humanitarian support during times of need.
“We deeply appreciate your assistance and support following our formal request,” Dr Constantin said.
“The efforts that contributed to securing approval for two humanitarian aid packages of five million dollars each, totalling ten million dollars for Lebanon through the Australian Foreign Minister, brought hope and relief to many families facing difficult conditions.
“This honour is not only recognition of a decision that was made, but also recognition of the compassion, commitment, and sense of responsibility you demonstrated towards the Lebanese people.”
Dr Constantin added that, on behalf of the organisation and the Lebanese diaspora worldwide — particularly in Australia — the WLCU expresses its sincere gratitude and hopes the gesture remains a symbol of friendship, solidarity, and the shared belief that humanitarian work rises above politics and borders.
In response, Minister Burke thanked the WLCU for the meaningful recognition and praised the organisation’s active and visible presence within both the broader Australian community and the Lebanese-Australian community. He also reaffirmed his commitment to continuing support for Lebanon and the Lebanese people whenever needed.
Also attending the meeting were WLCU Vice President for Presidential Affairs Mr. Remy Wehbe, Continental President Engineer Badwi El Hajj, and Continental Secretary-General Dr Imad Berro.
