Arabic version: وفاة الرئيس اليمني السابق عبد ربه منصور هادي عن 80 عامًا

Yemen’s former president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi has died at the age of 80 in exile, according to Al Jazeera. Hadi passed away at his residence in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as confirmed by the Yemeni presidency. State-run Yemeni TV reported the news but did not provide additional details.

Hadi was the internationally recognized president of Yemen, leading a fractured government mostly from exile for eight years as the country descended into civil war and famine before stepping down in 2022. Rashad al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, stated that Hadi fought for the Yemeni people’s right to a just state and human dignity.

The Yemeni government announced three days of mourning, during which flags will be flown at half-staff. Hadi fled to Saudi Arabia in 2015 following the outbreak of war between the Iran-backed Houthis and a Saudi-led coalition. He transferred his powers to the newly formed Presidential Leadership Council under reported Saudi pressure in April 2022, coinciding with a United Nations-brokered ceasefire.

Yemen remains divided, with the Houthi-controlled north and the government-run south facing ongoing challenges. Although a ceasefire is largely holding, the conflict has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread humanitarian needs, with 19.5 million people requiring aid last year. Hadi is survived by his wife, Hala, and six children.
