According to ABC News, some residents across South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula region did not receive census information by post before census night, prompting concerns about completing the form and possible fines.
Federal Liberal MP for Grey Tom Venning said his office had received at least 80 calls from constituents. He said entire streets had missed out on mail, including a 3-kilometre stretch near Port Pirie between Nelshaby and Napperby. Maitland and Arthurton were also among reported black spots.
Arthurton resident Creina Cullen said several people had visited the local post office believing forms might have been sent there. Another Arthurton resident, Arty Glazbrook, said he sought help from his granddaughter to complete the census online and knew of six other locals who had not received information.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said it was aware some households had not yet received census forms and letters, and was still dropping forms off in parts of Yorke Peninsula. It said people awaiting forms or needing help would not be fined and could request a form number or paper copy through census.abs.gov.au or the Census Contact Centre on 1800 181 227.
The ABS said it would contact people who had not completed the census. If there is no response to a reminder, it may issue a written legal direction; failing to comply could lead to court prosecution and a fine of up to $364 per day.
