Arabic version: زيلينسكي يتهم روسيا باستهداف موقع التراث الثقافي
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has condemned Russia for what he describes as a deliberate attack on the Unesco-listed Pechersk Lavra monastery in Kyiv, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuries to many others. This assertion comes as G7 leaders prepare for discussions in France regarding the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to The Guardian, Zelenskyy dismissed Moscow’s claims that it did not target the monastery, stating that two Russian drones deliberately targeted the area where the Lavra is located. The attack has drawn widespread condemnation, including from Unesco, which expressed concerns about significant damage to the site.
In response to the escalating violence, the European Union has implemented new sanctions against Russia, aimed at curtailing its military capabilities and addressing its aggression towards Ukraine. The sanctions target 34 individuals and 47 entities, including suppliers of military equipment to Russia.
Zelenskyy also expressed his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during the G7 summit, highlighting the importance of dialogue. However, he indicated that Russia has shown little interest in engaging in negotiations, as evidenced by the recent attacks on civilian sites in Ukraine.
The ongoing conflict and the recent attack on the Pechersk Lavra serve as stark reminders of the challenges facing Ukraine as it seeks to defend its cultural heritage and sovereignty against Russian aggression.
