According to Cnbc, Treasury yields reached multiyear highs on Thursday as U.S. oil prices crossed $100 per barrel again, raising concerns about inflation and future interest rates. The move overshadowed a wholesale inflation report that was broadly in line with expectations.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield rose by nearly 10 basis points to 4.938%, its highest level since November 2023. The yield is a key benchmark for mortgage borrowing, auto loans and credit card debt. The 2-year Treasury note yield reached 4.56%, its highest trading level since July 2024, while the 30-year Treasury bond yield climbed more than 5 basis points to 5.342%.

Yields had already increased on Wednesday after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the department would buy back $6 billion of longer-dated government bonds. The advance continued as traders focused on fears that a prolonged conflict in the Middle East between the U.S. and Iran could keep oil prices elevated.

Wholesale prices rose 0.4% in August, matching the Dow Jones consensus estimate. Excluding food and energy, core prices increased 0.2% for the month, below the forecast 0.3% rise. Yields remained elevated even after a strong 30-year Treasury auction that showed better-than-expected demand. Investors will next watch consumer price data due Friday for further signals on inflation and next week’s Federal Reserve interest-rate decision.
