The Exit Art exhibition in Darwin is showcasing the creative talents of 59 young artists from across the Northern Territory. The event, held at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, features a diverse range of artworks, including self-portraits that highlight the artists’ personal journeys and cultural identities. According to ABC News, the exhibition will be on display until the end of May.
This year’s showcase includes works from 14 high schools, with more than 120 applications submitted for consideration. The exhibition curator, Noam O’Reilly, noted a significant trend towards traditional crafting methods among the young artists, despite their upbringing in a digital age. O’Reilly praised the high school teachers for nurturing their students’ artistic abilities and encouraging a return to handmade arts.
Among the award winners are Austin Armstrong and Natasha Lee from Darwin High. Armstrong received a $13,000 NXT Gen ARTS grant for his self-portrait titled “Time to Wake Up,” which reflects his growth from childhood to adolescence through a comic-book style illustration. Lee’s oil painting, “Interconnected Threads of Culture,” won the Darwin Visual Arts award and incorporates elements of her Chinese heritage.
The Exit Art exhibition continues to highlight the evolving landscape of young artists in the Northern Territory, showcasing their unique perspectives and the importance of cultural identity in their work.
