According to SBS News, Australian teenager Lucas Herrington made an immediate impression in the Premier League after coming off the bench in Hull City’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United. The 18-year-old Socceroo entered after starting defender Nobel Mendy was injured in the 64th minute, helping Hull secure their first league win over United since 1974.

Hull had taken control through first-half set-pieces at the MKM Stadium. Centre-back Semi Ajayi scored in the 17th minute after United failed to deal with a corner. Regan Slater then delivered a 38th-minute free-kick for Mendy, another central defender, who headed in Hull’s second goal.

Herrington, described as the only Australian currently playing in England’s top flight, was introduced as part of a triple substitution. The former Colorado Rapids defender is a record $33 million Australian signing and became the first Australian teenager to play in the Premier League since Harry Kewell. At 18 years and 351 days, he is also the third-youngest Australian to play in England’s top flight.

The Queenslander had nine touches as Hull resisted United’s attempts to respond, and SBS News reported that his composed display suggested he was comfortable at the level. Hull boss Sergej Jakirovic said Ajayi, Mendy and captain Lewis Coyle would be assessed for injuries over the next 24 hours. Herrington could next feature in Wednesday AEST’s League Cup tie at Championship club Stoke, before Hull’s league match against fellow promoted side Coventry.
