Arabic version: ولي العهد السعودي يثير القلق بشأن تصرفات الإمارات في رسالة

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman sent a “lengthy” letter to UAE national security advisor Tahnoon bin Zayed complaining about the emirates’ activities in Sudan and Yemen. According to Middle East Eye, the letter, which was shared with U.S. officials, outlines Saudi complaints while also proposing mediation through Saudi Defence Minister Khalid bin Salman.

The correspondence indicates Saudi Arabia’s dissatisfaction with the UAE’s support for the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, stressing that the kingdom can no longer tolerate the ongoing civil conflict. Additionally, it justifies Saudi military actions in Yemen as essential for national security, particularly following its attacks on UAE-backed secessionist forces in southern Yemen.

Saudi Arabia has emphasized its view of Yemen as its sphere of influence, planning to take responsibility for the war-torn country on its southern border. The letter, lacking a signature section, has been assessed by U.S. officials as coming from Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, highlighting the significance of the grievances presented.

The document also criticizes the UAE for sending military aid to the Southern Transitional Council (STC) without Saudi approval, marking this as a “red line.” Tensions escalated further when Saudi forces bombed an Emirati weapons shipment in December, and the letter noted a covert operation to extract a former STC leader from Yemen.

The situation underscores the complex dynamics between the two nations, with Tahnoon bin Zayed playing a crucial role in navigating these challenges. As the national security advisor, he is known for his pragmatic approach in diplomacy, including efforts to mend relations with Qatar following a regional blockade. The ongoing rift between Saudi Arabia and the UAE is poised to require careful management from both sides.
