Steve Borthwick, the head coach of the England rugby team, has received backing from the Rugby Football Union (RFU) following a disappointing Six Nations campaign. England currently sits in fifth place, having suffered consecutive defeats against Scotland, Ireland, and Italy – which was the first loss to the Azzurri – ruining their ambitions and prompting questions over Borthwick’s future. According to BBC News, RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney acknowledged the team’s struggles and emphasized the need for a thorough review after their final match against France this Saturday.

Sweeney expressed disappointment over the recent outcomes, stating, “After a 12-match winning run, these past three results have been hugely disappointing, and we feel that just as much as everyone else.” He affirmed the RFU’s commitment to supporting Borthwick and his coaching staff as they prepare for their upcoming match and beyond.

Borthwick, who has a win ratio of 59% since taking charge, defended his position, insisting that the team will learn from this challenging period. He acknowledged the difficulties faced but remained optimistic about the team’s potential to improve. Captain Maro Itoje, whom Borthwick appointed at the start of 2025 to lead the team, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the responsibility for the team’s performance lies with the players, not just the coaching staff.

Despite the RFU’s support, questions linger regarding Borthwick’s leadership and the team’s direction. The RFU plans to conduct a comprehensive analysis to address the issues that have led to England’s current struggles, as they aim to restore confidence and effectiveness on the field.
