Life in Kibbutz Cabri, located just five miles from the Lebanese border, has been severely disrupted by ongoing military actions. Following a recent Israeli attack that killed more than 300 in Lebanon, air raid sirens have become a common occurrence, prompting residents to seek shelter multiple times a day. According to The Guardian, the reality for those living near the border is one of constant vigilance and fear.

The situation remains precarious, with kibbutz residents expressing uncertainty about the effectiveness of a supposed ceasefire. Yael Shavit noted that the official response time to attacks had been adjusted to 30 seconds, but skepticism remains about its practicality. Orly Moria questioned whether the response time truly reflected the urgency of the situation, highlighting the unpredictable nature of threats from Hezbollah.

Despite hopes for a quieter period, the conflict appears to have escalated again, with sirens sounding throughout northern Israel. The ongoing rocket fire from Hezbollah, which began on 2 March, has resulted in significant casualties, including deaths from drone strikes and missile attacks. While civilian casualties in northern Israel have been relatively low, the psychological toll on residents is high, as daily life is marked by the need for constant risk management.

Local leaders, such as Moshe Davidovich of the Mate Asher Regional Council, support the continuation of military operations against Hezbollah, citing the group’s long history of hostility towards Israel. Polls indicate that 79% of Israelis back ongoing strikes into Lebanon, raising concerns about the potential for an endless cycle of violence.

Some residents, like Amir Yarchi, argue that a purely military solution is unrealistic, fearing that it could lead to a prolonged conflict with ongoing casualties. Gili Moria, who has experience from past conflicts, advocates for a reduction in military activities, emphasizing the risks of a lengthy occupation. However, he also expresses cautious optimism that weakening Iran’s influence might eventually reduce Hezbollah’s aggression. The complex dynamics of the region continue to challenge the residents of Kibbutz Cabri as they navigate life under the shadow of conflict.
