Arabic version: فتح تحقيق في اختفاء ريبيكا ريتشاردسون عام 1998
A coronial inquest has opened in Gladstone investigating the circumstances of teenager Rebecca Richardson’s 1998 disappearance. Rebecca Richardson, 15, was last seen at Gin Gin on November 28, 1998, after attending a fair. According to ABC News, no one has ever been held responsible for her death, although Jody Martin Van Der Vegt pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact in 2002.
During the inquest, Mr. Van Der Vegt, who was a friend of Rebecca’s father, admitted he buried her body and lied to authorities. He claimed that a man known as “Triple M” killed Rebecca to teach him a lesson for talking to someone in Melbourne. He stated he was scared for his life and attempted to conceal the crime by burning and hiding her remains at a local dump.
The inquest aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding Rebecca’s death and whether Mr. Van Der Vegt’s actions caused or contributed to her death or the disposal of her remains. Although he has previously indicated where he placed her body, searches conducted at a waste facility with cadaver dogs have not yielded results.
Jessica Richardson, Rebecca’s sister, attended the inquest and expressed her anguish over the loss. She described the emotional toll of her sister’s disappearance and emphasized that Rebecca’s life held significant value. Coroner Donald MacKenzie acknowledged Jessica’s loss and the distress caused by the inability to recover her sister’s body. The inquest has been adjourned so further investigations can be carried out.
