Maeve King, a passionate model horse collector from Sydney, has nurtured a love for these intricate replicas since childhood. According to ABC News, King’s fascination began with seeing figurines in stores, leading to a collection that now boasts hundreds of model horses.
These model horses, which can be made from materials such as plastic, resin, and porcelain, are often hand-painted, making each piece unique. Kerren Hampton, a long-time collector, notes that prices can range from around $60 for standard models to over $10,000 for limited editions. The hobby attracts not only collectors but also those who appreciate the artistry and realism in these models, some of which are inspired by famous racehorses like Winx and Phar Lap.
The Australian model horse community is described as close-knit, with many collectors connecting online and attending live shows to showcase their collections. Kerri Afford, another dedicated collector, mentioned that despite misconceptions about the hobby, there is a significant number of enthusiasts across the country. While live shows may not attract massive crowds like those in the U.S., the passion for model horses remains strong.
Despite facing skepticism from outsiders, collectors like King and Afford emphasize the joy and creativity that this hobby brings. King describes model horses as a form of self-expression and a way to engage with equestrian culture without the financial burden of owning real horses. As the community continues to grow, the collectors are optimistic about the future of their beloved pastime.
