According to The Guardian, Labor Against War is urging the federal government to pursue a foreign policy independent from the “American war machine” after revelations that US military and weapons manufacturers control or have access to more than 100 bases across Australia.
The group has called on the government to “chart a new course” away from what it described as “fading guarantees of the past”. The foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, told the Senate that the US military presence was “at Australia’s invitation” and that the defence sites were “Australian bases under Australian command”.
The Morning Mail briefing also highlighted warnings that a predicted record-strength El Niño could raise food prices for Australian households already facing cost-of-living pressures. RBA officials are concerned that a severe event could drive food prices higher and create a further challenge later in the year as the central bank considers whether interest rates need to rise again.
Elsewhere, alleged killers of Australian brothers Jake and Callum Robinson and their American friend Jack Carter Rhoad have gone on trial in Baja California after the surfers were killed at a Mexican surfing hotspot in 2024. The briefing also reported that Radiohead will return to Australia for 16 shows in Perth, Melbourne and Sydney next year, the British band’s first tour of the country in 15 years.
