Arabic version: ستارمر يواجه أزمة قيادة مع مطالبة نواب العمال باستقالته
Sir Keir Starmer is under pressure to resign as Prime Minister, with numerous Labour critics calling for his departure from Downing Street. Following a disappointing set of elections last week, three members of his government, including Home Office minister Jess Phillips, have resigned, and more than 80 Labour MPs have urged him to step down or outline a timetable for his exit.
According to BBC News, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among cabinet ministers pushing Starmer to clarify his plans. However, during a recent cabinet meeting, Starmer asserted that he does not intend to resign and challenged potential rivals to formally contest his leadership. No MP has yet initiated a formal challenge, which requires the support of 81 colleagues, or 20% of Labour MPs.
Despite the turmoil, key allies such as Housing Secretary Steve Reed and Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden continue to express their support for Starmer. Health Secretary Wes Streeting, viewed as a potential leadership contender, refrained from commenting as he exited Downing Street. Foreign Office Minister Jenny Chapman, also a supporter, acknowledged ongoing discussions about Starmer’s leadership but noted that no minister contested his position during the cabinet meeting.
The mood within the party is tense, with over 80 Labour MPs publicly calling for Starmer’s resignation. Three ministers, including Jess Phillips, Alex Davies-Jones, and Miatta Fahnbulleh, have resigned from their positions. Former deputy PM Angela Rayner and Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham are seen as potential challengers, although Burnham would need to become an MP to enter the contest, complicating his bid.
Starmer’s leadership is facing scrutiny following a disastrous local election outcome, where Labour lost nearly 1,500 councillors across England, lost power in Wales, and recorded its worst results in Scottish Parliament elections. These events have intensified doubts about his leadership, particularly in light of his controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as US ambassador, which has raised questions about his judgment.
