Cole Palmer and Phil Foden have been left out of England’s World Cup squad, a surprising turn of events considering their rise just two years ago. According to BBC News, both players were once seen as key figures for the national team, having progressed through the Manchester City academy together.
Palmer, who had a standout performance in the Euro 2024 final against Spain, where he scored after coming off the bench, has struggled with consistency this season. Despite scoring nine goals in 25 Premier League appearances for Chelsea, his form has declined compared to his earlier seasons.
Foden, similarly, has faced challenges in maintaining his form. Although he had a brief resurgence with six goals in five games before Christmas, he has not scored since. His performance against Uruguay in March, where he failed to make a significant impact, likely contributed to his exclusion from the squad.
Under coach Thomas Tuchel, reputation has taken a backseat to current performance. Players like Eberechi Eze and Morgan Rogers have earned their spots based on their recent displays, while Foden and Palmer, once expected to be regulars, now find themselves on the sidelines as the team prepares for the World Cup.
