Full Circle Theatre Company has officially launched in Adelaide, introducing itself as the city’s first professional musical theatre company. The inaugural production, Catch Me If You Can, is set to take place at Futures Theatre in November. This new troupe was unveiled last night at Immersive Light and Art on Light Square.
Artistic director Jo Casson, who has directed more than 20 musicals, emphasized the need for a dedicated professional company in Adelaide. “We have so much talent in South Australia that it’s a bit outrageous,” she stated. According to ABC News, Casson aims to provide local artists the opportunity to work in their hometown, reducing the need for them to relocate for professional opportunities.
While Adelaide boasts numerous amateur and semi-professional theatre groups, these often operate under tight budgets and require cast and crew members to maintain day jobs. Full Circle, supported by patron Pamela Wall AO, aims to fill the gap between local amateur productions and major national tours.
In its first 18 months, Full Circle plans to produce three existing works to build its reputation. Casson acknowledged the challenges of promoting new works, stating that without significant funding, it can be difficult to get unknown shows produced. She expressed a commitment to also support local writers and composers in the future.
To bolster its mission, Full Circle has enlisted three official ambassadors, including writer Peter Goers, vocalist Libby O’Donovan, and performer Rachael Beck. Casson explained that the ambassador program aims to connect with industry leaders who can endorse the company and its goals.
Casson noted that musical theatre currently attracts only 9% of live entertainment audiences in South Australia, compared to up to 17% in other states. She is determined to grow this audience and create partnerships with community groups and educational institutions to make professional theatre more accessible and affordable for everyone.
