Year 12 students at Melbourne’s Mazenod College have been caught cheating on an English exam using AI tools. The incident prompted a school investigation, leading to a reduction in the students’ marks.

According to ABC News, the school confirmed that several students had utilized AI during an oral English exam, although the exact number of students involved was not disclosed. Principal Paul Shannon stated that appropriate procedures were followed in reporting the incident to the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

Mr. Shannon emphasized the importance of academic integrity, noting that assessments are intended to reflect a student’s own understanding and independent thought. He highlighted that while AI tools present a growing challenge in education, they have no place in assessments and examinations where students must demonstrate their knowledge independently and fairly.

The VCAA has established guidelines indicating that the use of AI tools may violate principles of academic integrity. Schools are required to investigate any suspected misuse of AI to ensure compliance with these regulations, which mandate that students submit original work and avoid plagiarism or cheating.
