Wyndham Clark has established a strong lead at the US Open, finishing the second round with a four-shot advantage at Shinnecock Hills. The 2023 champion posted a score of six-under 64 in the first round and followed it with a 69, capitalizing on more favorable weather conditions during his tee times.

According to BBC News, Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy, the world’s top two golfers, struggled with the gusty wind, both finishing the round at level par and seven strokes behind Clark. Scheffler described the wind as “the biggest challenge,” while McIlroy noted that their side of the draw faced the most severe conditions.

Despite the weather, two players from McIlroy and Scheffler’s group, Tom Kim and Sam Stevens, managed to remain competitive, sitting four shots back in joint second place. McIlroy initially appeared poised to close in on Clark’s lead but faltered due to a combination of poorly executed shots and the strengthening wind on his second nine holes.

Clark, who faced criticism after a previous incident at the US Open last year, expressed a desire to redeem himself and regain the support of fans. He acknowledged the pressure of maintaining his lead but felt confident in his game heading into the weekend. The tournament continues to present challenges, particularly with the notoriously difficult Shinnecock Hills course, where past halfway leaders have struggled to maintain their advantage.
