Arabic version: جيفري دونالدسون يبدأ عقوبته في السجن بعد إدانته
Jeffrey Donaldson has spent his first night in Maghaberry Prison following his conviction on 18 sex abuse charges, including rape. The former leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) was found guilty on Monday, marking a dramatic fall from grace for a prominent figure in Northern Ireland politics. According to BBC News, Donaldson is expected to face a lengthy sentence for a string of child sex crimes including rape.
Having visited the prison many times in his role as a local MP, Donaldson now faces a stark reality as he begins a new chapter behind bars. He will be kept under tight observation and may share his cell with another inmate, spending up to 12 hours a day confined within its walls. His mobile phone has been confiscated, limiting his communication with the outside world, and he will only be allowed one visit every four weeks.
Donaldson’s conviction has sent shockwaves through Northern Ireland’s political landscape, particularly affecting the DUP, which has struggled to recover from the fallout. The party suspended Donaldson following his arrest, and he was automatically expelled after two years passed in March, as per party rules. Many within the DUP feel betrayed, as Donaldson’s legal troubles overshadowed their election campaigns.
During his trial, Donaldson maintained a defiant posture, but ultimately, he was unable to convince the jury of his innocence. His downfall has raised questions about the integrity of his leadership, especially as he was once credited with uniting the party during a tumultuous period. As the political landscape shifts, Donaldson’s legacy will now be defined by his criminal actions rather than his political achievements.
