Parramatta’s Lord Mayor, councillors and community leaders stepped out of their comfort zones last night in support of families of seriously ill children for the inaugural Lord Mayor’s Sleepout for Sick Kids.

Participants swapped their beds for sleeping bags under the stars in the backyard of Ronald McDonald House Greater Western Sydney and raised more than $37,000 to support families experiencing the most difficult times in their lives.

The event puts a spotlight on the growing demand for the support services Ronald McDonald House provides, including accommodation, meals and vital care to thousands of families each year.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Martin Zaiter said the experience was a powerful reminder of what families go through every day.

“Spending one night outdoors is a small sacrifice compared to what these families face. When a child is sick, nothing else matters. In these most trying times, families should never have to worry about where they’ll sleep or what they’ll eat,” Cr Zaiter said.

“The sleepout wasn’t just about raising funds, it was about building awareness, pulling up our sleeves to support and most importantly showing these families that they are not alone.

“Parramatta has a big heart, and last night proved that. I’d like to extend my most heartfelt thanks to all who generously donated their time and their money.”

Ronald McDonald House Greater Western Sydney Executive Manager – Fundraising & Partnerships Nermeen Yacoub said the support would have a direct impact.

“Every dollar raised helps us provide a place to stay, meals and essential support so families can focus on what matters most – their child,” Ms Yacoub said.

“While we support thousands of families each year, the need continues to grow. This incredible effort from the Parramatta community will help us reach even more families in need.”

Council contributed $7,000 through the Lord Mayor’s Donation Budget 2025/26 to support the initiative.
