According to BBC News, Leicester City are attempting to recover from one of the lowest points in their history after back-to-back League One wins. The Foxes, who are 10th in the division, beat Doncaster 2-1 before a 4-0 victory over Bromley, their first successive wins since last November.
Russell Martin was appointed on a three-year deal in June after Leicester’s decline from Premier League champions a decade ago and FA Cup winners five years ago. The club have since faced financial problems, points deductions and relegation to the third tier. Martin had faced supporter anger when two wins in eight league games left Leicester 17th and one point above the relegation zone.
BBC Sport reported that Leicester operated under a transfer embargo for five weeks in the summer under the EFL’s Salary Cost Management Protocol. The club could not sign players until they raised money, affecting the order of their business. Jeremy Monga and Abdul Fatawu were sold in mid-July, while Conor Chaplin and Alex McCarthy arrived five days after Monga joined Manchester City on 11 July. In total, 34 players left during the summer, including loans and academy exits, and 16 arrived.
Martin has sought to change standards at Seagrave, where the atmosphere is understood to have improved. A ban on mobile phones in the canteen is enforced by running drills for players and staff who break rules or arrive late. The club have also appointed James McCarron as sporting director, with McCarron watching training most days and working closely with Martin.
Supporter frustration remains directed at senior leadership and chief football officer Jon Rudkin. Leicester sold all 23,500 season tickets, while the club is up for sale. BBC Sport said owner Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha remains committed and rejected a £15m Manchester United bid for 18-year-old midfielder Louis Page on deadline day after Martin, Rudkin and McCarron wanted to keep him. Leicester’s pre-season target remains 90 points.
