Residents of Urana, New South Wales, are celebrating the opening of a new supermarket after enduring over four years without one. The previous IGA supermarket was destroyed by fire in April 2022, leaving the community in a food desert. According to ABC News, the new store opened its doors to eager shoppers at 8am on Monday morning, providing a much-needed grocery option for the town’s 1,300 residents.

Patrick and Natasha Bourke, known affectionately as Pat and Tosh, have revitalized their agricultural business to bring the supermarket back to life. Mr. Bourke, the town’s former mayor, expressed the necessity of having a supermarket in a community that already has a hospital and chemist. “When you have a hospital, doctors and chemist, you have to have a supermarket,” he stated.

Before the new supermarket’s opening, residents faced significant challenges, often traveling long distances to access groceries. Fiona Edwards, a local resident, noted that many people had to drive up to an hour to shop in larger towns, which became increasingly difficult due to high fuel prices. She highlighted the struggles of residents without transportation, who relied on public transport that often limited their ability to carry groceries.

The reopening of the supermarket has already had a positive impact on the community’s morale. Ralph Emery, a local, remarked that the return of the supermarket has revived the town, which he had counted as being without the service for 1,553 days. The Bourkes plan to expand their services to nearby towns, offering deliveries to assist residents during the busy harvest season. “This town would have been dead,” Emery said, emphasizing the significant difference the store makes to Urana’s vibrancy.
