According to Allafrica, heavy rainfall and flooding in Damazin city and several areas of Sudan’s Blue Nile State are worsening conditions for thousands of displaced people living in shelters and camps. The flooding compounds a fragile humanitarian situation already shaped by ongoing armed conflict and a weak humanitarian response.

Field information indicates that rain has inundated large parts of displacement sites, causing several temporary shelters to collapse or sustain damage. Flooding has also disrupted movement for residents and made it more difficult for humanitarian assistance to reach affected areas.

Concerns are rising about malaria and waterborne diseases. Stagnant water, deteriorating sanitation services and limited access to safe drinking water are increasing those risks. Displaced people report persistent shortages of food, medicine and shelter materials, while healthcare access remains limited. Children, women, older people and persons with disabilities face heightened risks as living conditions worsen.

Displaced communities have appealed to humanitarian organizations, relevant authorities and the international community for emergency shelter, food, medicine, clean drinking water and improved sanitation. The Darfur Network for Human Rights called for emergency assistance to be scaled up, along with flood-mitigation and disease-prevention measures and unimpeded humanitarian access to affected areas. It said continued rainfall combined with the effects of armed conflict could further deteriorate conditions, requiring an urgent and coordinated response to protect civilians and meet basic needs.
