According to ABC News, at least three David Jones stores in Perth are set to close after the retailer entered receivership. Investment analysis firm MST Marquee said the Westfield Carousel, Garden City and Karrinyup stores were likely to shut. The future of the retailer’s flagship store in Perth’s CBD remains uncertain.

Landlord Starhill Global REIT said in an announcement to the Singapore Stock Exchange that the CBD David Jones store was $1.48 million behind in rent. It is considering either finding a replacement tenant or opening the Hay Street Mall building to multiple tenants, while reducing David Jones’ floor area. City of Perth Lord Mayor Bruce Reynolds said the uncertainty was troubling, particularly for people approaching Christmas without knowing what lies ahead.

Starhill Global said it remained positive about the medium- to long-term outlook for Perth’s CBD, citing the February 2026 opening of the Edith Cowan University City Campus, population growth and supportive economic fundamentals in Western Australia. Reynolds said the city faced short-term retail challenges and empty shopfronts, but pointed to investment plans for St Martin’s Arcade and said $800 million had been invested in the CBD area in the previous four months.

The closures come in the same week Morley Galleria reopened following a $240 million upgrade, reflecting what ABC News described as a mixed picture for metropolitan retail. Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief economist Dr Daniel Kiely said major retailers helped attract foot traffic that supports smaller businesses. The CCI also cited restrictive trading hours and called for longer Sunday and public-holiday trading, while Reynolds urged a national discussion about the future of retail.
