According to ABC News, the Forster family is preparing to drive 3,500 kilometres from Melbourne to Busselton in Western Australia after 18-month-old Noah received a successful heart transplant. The family chose a road trip as Noah recovers because they want to protect his vulnerable immune system.

Noah was diagnosed at six days old with ventricular non-compaction dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition affecting the heart’s left ventricle. His parents, Sinead and Alex Forster, moved to Melbourne soon after the diagnosis so he could receive medical care and support before becoming seriously ill. Noah went into heart failure at seven months old and was kept alive by a ventricular assist device.

The family waited nine months in hospital before being told that a suitable donor had been found. Noah’s older brother, Teddy, died at 20 months old while waiting for a transplant after having the same serious heart condition. Sinead Forster said cardiologists had told the couple there was a one-in-two chance that another child could have a similar condition.

The family said they remain conscious that, while they celebrate Noah’s chance at life, the donor’s family is grieving. Ms Forster said they would be forever thankful for the donation. Heart Kids regional family support coordinator Ariana Potts, who met the family after Teddy’s birth, described them as compassionate and generous and said they had shown immense courage.

For the Forsters, the drive home will also offer time together before what Ms Forster called normal life begins. She said Noah had shown resilience throughout his treatment and that the family hopes to make lasting memories on the journey to Busselton.
